Hello! Thank you for taking the time to find out a little bit more about me and my adventures with landscapes and landscape painting.
I have long been fascinated by landscapes. My way of engaging with them is through painting, sketching and generally being outside within them. In the past I have been a landscape researcher and a Community Heritage Officer and both roles gave me opportunities to spend more time outside in beautiful landscapes, getting to find out more about their history and how people experience them. My desire and urge to paint, however, never left me and in 2021/2022, with the support and encouragement of friends and family I decided to turn 'Adventures with Landscapes' into a way for me to share my love of landscapes and painting with others.
We moved to Tomintoul in the Cairngorms National Park in 2017. I am very lucky to call this little corner of Scotland my home. Everyday the landscapes provide something new. There is always something new to explore and they provide the best kind of assault on the senses!
I take inspiration from all landscapes around me – rural, wild, urban – and the wildlife and people within them. Living in Scotland I find a constant source of inspiration of the beautiful landscapes of this country, and will never tire of trying to capture the wild and inspiring qualities in particular of the Highland landscapes. Growing up in the North East of England, I also draw inspiration from these landscapes which have their own unique story to tell too.
I love the play of the light as it bounces and collides with different elements within the landscape, whether that be absorption from the rocks, gleaming off water or snow, or the the dancing shadows created from the flora and fauna within them. I am fascinated by the constantly changing nature of landscapes and also with the myriad of relationships that occur within them, the weather, geology, landforms and people.
I believe that landscapes are not just what we live on but live within. They have their own character and stories to tell. How we experience these landscapes and the memories we create within them are all part of the experience of landscapes. When I paint I try to capture the ephemeral and changing nature of landscapes. Colour is very important within my work and I love to create feelings and emotions within the painting through the use of colour, light and shade, and different brush strokes.
