The Scalan is located in the Braes of Glenlivet on the Glenlivet Estate. Once the site of a hidden seminary during the 1700s, allowing young men to continue to train and practice their faith when Catholocism was outlawed, the site was then a working farm harnessing the power and productivity that the landscape and its systems could provide.
Working with Aberdeen-based photographer Geraldine McClure our aim with this project is to take inspiration of the Scalan site, with it's changing character and nature throughout the year and create pieces that reflect the multiple histories and ongoing stories of this evocative site.
I am keen to reduce the material impact of my art practice. To do this I have been experimenting with making my own papers and including materials that I have foraged from the landscapes around me.
My long-term aim is to be able to use the paper to then paint on rather than buying in all of the paper that I use. I also hope to use natural dyes (again using materials that I can find and source locally within the landscape) to dye the paper.
